Major At College:
BM in Music Composition
What is your favorite thing about your chosen major?
Composition has always been my passion, so it’s an amazing experience to work each day towards something I love. For me, the process of creating is both engaging and therapeutic, and my lifeblood comes from crafting music. I really can’t imagine doing anything else.
What is your favorite thing about your college?
Chapman has the personalized education of a smaller university, with the opportunities and experiences of a larger university. All my professors know me by name and care about my success as a student. At the same time, I have opportunities that wouldn’t be available at a smaller school. In two weeks, my choir will be singing with Placido Domingo and the LA Symphony at the opening of a new multi-million dollar performing arts center on campus.
How do you integrate your faith in your pursuit of work in fine arts?
Composing is a platform for me to express my faith and spirituality through music. The famous composer and conductor, Leonard Bernstein, once said that the nature of composing is reaching into Heaven and bringing notes back down to Earth, and in that action, the composer “partakes of the divine”. I agree with Bernstein.
What would you like to do after you graduate from college?
My music career could take many different forms. Concert music, musical theater composing, performing and touring with my own folk music, the list goes on. At the moment, the last of those options appeals most to me.
A word of advice to SCA students who might be considering majoring in fine arts at college:
Being a music major takes a ton of work. When you’re a music major, you live in the music building at your university. Make sure that music is something you’re absolutely passionate about, enough that you can dedicate most waking hours to it.
