Class of 2017:
Grand Canyon University
B.A in Theatre and Drama
What is your favorite thing about your chosen major?
God has given me the passion to influence, inspire, and motivate people through the art of storytelling. With this, I am grateful to be immersed in a college where I can learn, express, and be challenged through art every day. I also believe that acting teaches you how to be a better, and kinder person. Theatre’s famous acting coach teaches, “Unless the theatre can ennoble you, make you a better person, you should flee from it.”
What is your favorite thing about your college?
I am grateful to be a part of a small community, particularly one that is centered on Jesus. My professors are not just teachers, but life coaches. Being in a small major gives students the opportunity to have the one-on one attention that you may not always get from a larger college campus. It also emphasis learning the entirety of the fine arts production –theatrical design, acting (improvisation, film), dance, voice, and the business aspect of it; keeping their students well rounded for the future.
How do you integrate your faith in your pursuit of work in fine arts?
God calls His children to be disciples of all nations. I believe that every field of work requires missionaries. My field just so happens to be the arts. No matter what my future ends up looking like, at the end of the day I hope to stand before God and say that I gave it my all for His Kingdom.
What would you like to do after you graduate from college?
My pursuit in this field is to be a working artist, whether in film or stage acting. My plan is take steps in moving away from Phoenix. The dream is to experience the arts in as much of the world as possible.
A word of advice to SCA students who might be considering majoring in fine arts at college:
Dream big or go home! Life is too short for regrets of the past. This field requires quite a bit of hard work, sacrifice, and sometimes what may seem like a lack of security. However, if you truly trust the Lord with your passions, you cannot fail with His guidance. In any field you may choose, trust in the Lord to walk you across the waters. His plan is much greater than you could ever imagine. His requirement for His children is to just take the first step.
