In what ways were you involved in Fine Arts (music, drama, art) during college?
I participated in musical theater workshops/performance classes and took regular piano lessons. I also was cast in NYC the premier of a musical that one of my professor’s wrote. Outside of school I sang in several church choirs, and took voice and dance lessons.
What do you currently do for a living?
I work for an alternative investment management firm that focuses on private equity and real assets.
In what ways are you currently involved in Fine Arts as an adult?
I currently sing with the NYC-based choir MasterVoices under the direction of Ted Sperling. Each season we perform at venues like Carnegie Hall and City Center. This summer I traveled with them to the Verbier Music Festival in Verbier, Switzerland. I also sing in the choir at Redeemer Presbyterian Church. In the summer of 2015 I traveled back to Phoenix to be in Dream City Church’s production of Mary Poppins.
What does being involved in the Fine Arts do for your life, body, mind, or spirit?
I consider fine arts an essential part of my identity. I love performing and bringing music to other people. On a more practical note, if I know I have to sing I will drink lots of water. So I guess I can thank fine arts for keeping me hydrated!
A word of advice to SCA students who might be considering participating in the arts avocationally:
Find creative ways to pursue your craft and try looking outside of school for performance opportunities. Get involved in school if you can. But, it will benefit you to start expanding your arts network outside of the college walls as soon as possible. That way you will have some momentum after you graduate.
